FULL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING – Tuesday 17th September 2024
A meeting of Wall Parish Council will be held in the Village Hall in Wall, starting at 7:30pm
Wall is a small village and civil parish in Staffordshire, just south of Lichfield. It lies on the site of the Roman settlement of Letocetum. The Parish includes the small hamlets of Pipehill, Hilton and Chesterfield, and the tiny hamlet of Aldershawe, which is about 1⁄2 mi (800 m) north of the village of Wall. The nearby double island junction of the A5 and A5127 roads and the M6 Toll motorway is often referred to as 'Wall Island'. History. The earliest evidence of settlement in Wall is the discovery of flints dating to the Neolithic period found in the upper part of Wall village. The first detailed evidence of human settlement comes in the 1st century. Wall was an important staging post on Watling Street, the Roman military road to North Wales. The road network was crucial to the Roman’s control over their empire. At staging posts like Wall weary officials, soldiers and imperial messengers could find lodging for the night and change their horse. At Wall today you can still see the remains of the Roman settlement, Letocetum, including an inn for travellers and the public baths, with its sequence of cold, warm and hot rooms. This open-air site is open at all times and there is no charge. The site is managed and maintained by English Heritage and owned by the National Trust . The museum, a few doors from the site entrance on Watling Street, provides a fascinating insight into life here and displays many excavated finds. For opening hours please refer to the museum website. Post Roman changes. Since the Roman era development of Wall has been slow and it has never grown beyond a small village. The re-routing of the A5 around Wall in 1965 relieved the village of traffic, re-establishing its quiet nature. The Parish Council consists of 7 elected Parish Councillors. Council meetings are held on the third Tuesday bi-monthly in Wall Village Hall and dates are displayed in the Parish Noticeboard at the car park.
